Planning wood windows
Discuss exterior protection, finish maintenance and matching adjoining trim.
Options and tradeoffs
Compare interior wood appearance, exterior finish or cladding and glazing packages together. Review samples against existing trim and ask what maintenance the particular exterior system needs over its service life.
How to scope the work
Confirm finish choices and installation dimensions before ordering, including any trim that will be retained. The installer should protect exposed wood and complete specified sealing and finish details during the installation process.
Comparing estimates
Ask whether staining or painting is factory-applied, completed on site or excluded. List trim restoration, hardware finishes and disposal separately so the proposal describes the finished window rather than an unfinished unit.
After the project
Inspect the finish and joints according to the manufacturer's care guidance, particularly on exposed exterior components. Address coating damage or water entry promptly and retain the original finish specifications for compatible touch-ups.
